King County and the City of Seattle are heading up a project a heat mapping project to detect locales experiencing the worst effects of increasing temperatures.
Volunteers will collect data that will help the county and the city prepare for significant changes brought on by climate change.
“The heat mapping project will provide us with the current, reliable data we need to support communities that are disproportionately experiencing the harmful effects of rising temperatures,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said in a press release from King County. “The results of this scientific research will inform community-led solutions to the extreme heat events that are occurring more frequently as the result of climate change.”
Climate consulting firm CAPA Strategies is working with the county, city and the National Weather Service, which is providing additional technical support.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said the project will strongly consider disenfranchised communities and use the data to address the inequitable burden placed on those communities, according to the press release.
