Lime, a San Francisco-based transportation company, will offer a fleet of its electric scooters residents of the areas of North Highline and White Center, a region between West Seattle and Burien, can ride to get around at low cost and a cleaner environment, backers said.
“From the Greenbridge YWCA over to Moonshot Café and up to Salvadorean Bakery, there are a lot of essential trips throughout White Center and North Highline,” Joe McDermott, King County Council member, said in a press release from the county’s website. “I’m excited that electric scooters can be a part of connecting our community – from businesses, community centers, parks and transit. This pilot project will allow King County to learn how best to facilitate safe, reliable, affordable and accessible mobility options for everyone, and I look forward to throwing on my mask and a helmet and participating in the coming year.”
The one-year pilot program was created by McDermott, who said scooters would give residents a safe way to travel while social distancing because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He added the scooters are an ideal way to connect with local transit.
The program kicked off on Aug. 17.
Pricing includes $1 to acquire a scooter and $0.36 per minute to ride. Low-income residents can apply for a "Lime Access Program" in which they could acquire a scooter for $0.50 and then $0.07 per minute to ride, according to the press release.
A Lime app is available for interested persons to find out where the nearest scooter can be rented. Riders must wear a helmet and a mask if near other people.
